Brief Chronology of Mining Developments

1883 - - Sinking of No. 4 shaft commenced
1884 - - Completion of shaft sinking to the Red Ash seam at a depth of 616 ft; the shaft dimensions were 12' by 30'
1885 Mar - Start of breaker construction
1885 Dec - Completion of breaker; 45 men were employed in its construction and 2 million feet of lumber were used; its daily capacity was rated at 4000 tons in a 10-hour shift
1886 - - The new breaker at the No. 4 shaft was idle during the year, but the main opening of the mine continued underground, making a large territory available for breast work
1887 - - Prior to 1888 there are no separate reports of shipments from Breaker No. 4
1889 - - The company was described as having 'strong, vigilant and money-making management'
1891 May 5th Both the No. 1 and the No. 4 breakers were destroyed by fire; 1000 men and boys were thown out of work and the losses were estimated at $300,000 of which $100,000 was covered by insurance
1892 Dec - The new No. 4 breaker, to replace the two breakers which had burned down, started to prepare coal for market
